HEAT RESISTANT PAINT

Corrosion, chemicals, heat and fire can cause major headaches for the energy sector which relies heavily on the integrity of steel components. In the first of a series of articles around the importance of maintaining steel integrity we examine the extent of the problem and identify the main areas of concern for onshore energy facilities.

As we know, iron is a widely used material in construction. If you desire a durable and long-lasting iron construction, heat-resistant iron paint could be the solution.

From light constructions to heavy constructions like building skyscrapers, factories, bridges, ships, and more, iron is essential. Despite its strength, using this material presents its own challenges, one of which is corrosion.

Corrosion can certainly result in the deterioration of a structure's mechanical properties and even lead to catastrophic failure. One thing to note is that heat and rapid temperature fluctuations contribute significantly to corrosion and surface damage. Therefore, a special heat-resistant coating is needed.

the tolerance may be lower, ranging from 250 to 450 degrees Celsius. This type of paint is excellent for coating iron surfaces that interact with high heat.

Examples include pipe installations, valve, exhaust pipes, fire springle and more. Applying heat-resistant iron paint is an easy method to efficiently combat fires in commercial and residential buildings.

The materials used to develop this product include phenolic epoxy, silicone, novolac epoxy, or more specialized multi-polymer matrices.

Types of Heat-Resistant Iron Paint High-temperature resistant iron paint consists of several types or classes. Here are the top 4 types you can apply to iron constructions in your building.

1. Silicone Heat Resistant Paint

Solvalitt Alu is an aluminium-pigmented coating that provides a durable aesthetic finish on assets exposed to elevated temperatures and is heat resistant up to 600 °C. Solvalitt Alu is a one-component, physically-drying silicone acrylic coating and is compatible with all products in our heat-resistant Jotatemp range. Suitable for non-insulated surfaces, it can be used as a primer, midcoat or finish coat in atmospheric environments. The one-component simplicity makes the application easy. Solvalitt Alu protects against chalking and is a product variant of Solvalitt, which is available in 14 high-temperature stable colours

2. Phenolic Epoxy / Novalac Epoxy

Epoxy HR is a heat-resistant coating suitable for temperatures up to 205 °C (401 °F) continuous. It is also suitable for cryogenic temperatures, down to -196 °C (-321 °F), can be used for both insulated and non-insulated substrates. Epoxy HR has very good water resistance, which gives it excellent corrosion protection properties. It significantly prolongs the lifetime of an asset, reducing the maintenance need and the risk of corrosion under insulation (CUI) – avoiding unnecessary and costly shutdowns. Epoxy HR is suitable for maintenance situations and can be applied on hot substrates up to 150 °C and St2 surface preparation. The product has proven its excellent performance over the last 20 years of successful applications globally.

3. Alkyd Coating

Aluminum Paint HR. This is a one component styrene modified oxidatively drying alkyd coating. It is heat resistant up to 250 °C. Can be used as an exterior aluminum finish usually within an alkyd system. Can be used as primer, mid coat or finish coat in atmospheric environments. Suitable for properly prepared carbon steel and aluminium substrates.

Generally used at Exhaust pipes, process piping and engine parts.
